Yoga for Scoliosis workshop – March, 2014

with Beatriz Osorio

The body has an extraordinary capacity for compensation. In the case of scoliosis the spine moves laterally forming an S or C curve and the ribs follow this movement. During this lateral rotational movement, the ribs and the muscles between the ribs move sideways and rotate backwards with the spine. On the opposite side of the spine of the lateral curve, the intercostal muscles are underdeveloped and the ribs are compressed causing a postural misalignment, discomfort, pain and in severe cases cardiopulmonary issues. Yoga can help the body to relearn a more symmetrical posture, by combining yoga poses, conscious breathing, and awareness of how to get into a better alignment. The spine will stretch, and the underdeveloped muscles will get strengthened, creating a more effortless posture and less pain.

Chanting and Mantras

w/Celeste Allu

“Mantra Chanting helps induce the “relaxation” response, causing reduction of heart beat, brain waves and respiration”

In this event we will explore the ancient yoga practice of chanting and mantra repetition, discuss its effects on the body and mind, and the benefits of adopting its daily practice. We will also examine the relationship between mantras and meditation, learning tools that can assist you with your meditation practice. This workshop will begin with a short asana practice to open the energetic centers of the body and will conclude with a Kirtan experience to feel the bliss of chanting.

Pranayama Yoga

w/Melanie De Marchena

Yoga teaches that the breath and the mind are intertwined. Hence, a pranayama practice seeks to control the mind by controlling the breath.  In the practice of pranayama we regulate the breath in order to either energize or quiet the mind. In this  class will begin with a brief gentle asana practice.  We will then practice several different pranayama techniques, followed by a deep Yoga Nidra relaxation exercise. You will leave the class feeling both more energized and more relaxed with a very calm and quiet mind.

Yoga for Hormonal Changes

with Beatriz Osorio

Yoga helps to overcome distressing menopausal symptoms easily and achieve smooth transition. Studies have proven the effectiveness of yoga and meditation in controlling the challenging symptoms of menopause.

Menopause, a significant event in life of every woman, brings a lot of health changes. In between 40 to 60 years, ovaries in women start to produce less estrogen and progesterone, which bring menopause. Irregular menstruation, hot flashes, night sweats, frequent mood swings, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness, backache, and poor sexual drive are some of the side effects that make women more anxious. The feeling of anxiety and being overwhelmed can disturb the daily activities of a woman’s life. Symptoms may vary from person to person. Some even don’t notice anything, while some may develop chronic illness like heart diseases or osteoporosis. Yoga and meditation deal with menopausal symptoms and improve the life of women living with the annoying symptoms of menopause.  by Dr. Minakshi Welukar

This class will give you yoga tools to manage this normal life stage.
